ASTRONOMY PAGE 14

The Great Auroral Storm - 29/30 Oct 03.

This storm was caused by the then 3rd biggest flare in recorded history, which was fired directly at Earth, and hit us at 2125 k.p.s.( 5 million mph) The result was a teriffic display of the northern lights, which for me was an "all sky display"

Orions Belt can be seen rising verticly surounded by a mass of green rays that streched from horizon to horizon.

This is the first of several atempts to capture the corona, the point where all the rays meet.I used 20 secs exposure with 200iso, but even this is probably overexposed, the display was that bright.

The Seven Sisters in Taurus show clearly, with waves of green above rising to the overhead.

The Andromeda galaxy seemed to be very close to the centre of the action.

Cassiopia can be seen in the top of this photo, with a mixture of reds & greens heading towards the zenith.

This shot was taken looking north over my croft. As you can see,the Scotish weather had it's say, with a few rain showers.

The most spectacular reds were to the south west, with huge clumps of rays climbing over 50 degrees.

The shot I never thought I'd get, Mars & the aurora together.
